film synopsis
Dedicated, hard-working Ichiko (Mariko Tsutsui) has been a homecare nurse to the elderly Tôko Oishi (Hisako Ohkata) long enough to be considered part of the family. She is especially close to Motoko (Mikako Ichikawa), one of Oishi’s granddaughters, who is studying to one day follow in Ichiko’s footsteps. As close friends, Ichiko playfully and thoughtlessly reveals a secret from her past that could come back to haunt her. After Mokoto’s sister disappears and the abductor turns out to be Ichiko’s nephew, Mokoto, in a fit of jealousy, reveals Ichiko’s secret to the press, prompting her downfall. Accused of complicity by all around her, including friends and co-workers, the safe, happy life that Ichiko knew crumbles. Is revenge worth pursuing? This taut, slow-burning mystery from writer/director Kôji Fukada (Harmonium), reaffirms his status as one of the most thrilling voices in contemporary world cinema.
