2020 Film Festival
film synopsis
After losing her adopted daughter in a tragic accident, Isabelle (Anne Dorval) makes a pilgrimage to Vietnam to immerse herself in her daughter’s birthplace. There, Isabelle unexpectedly discovers her daughter’s biological mother (Leanna Chea). But the relationship that grows between them is not built on truth, and secrets threaten the very foundation of each woman’s life. What unfolds is a film of remarkable beauty and deeply charged emotional power, exploring loss, identity, colonialism, the true nature of motherhood and the aftermath of war. Notable for pitch-perfect performances by its leads (Dorval is best known outside of Quebec for the numerous films she’s made with director Xavier Dolan) and stunningly beautiful cinematography, 14 Days, 12 Nights proposes that the loss of a child has a profound ripple effect, and we cannot always predict where those ripples will lead.
