A wordless fable about a man washed ashore on an island and learning to live with nature, The Red Turtle is another mesmerizing work of animated filmmaking from the revered Studio Ghibli. “So simple, so pure, it feels as if it has existed for hundreds of years.” Variety

film synopsis

Nothing promises quality like Studio Ghibli, the company that has created many of animation's greatest masterpieces over the past several decades, from Spirited Away to My Neighbor Totoro and so many others. The Red Turtle is Ghibli's first international co-production, directed by the Oscar®-winning Michaël Dudok de Wit, making his feature debut here.

A wordless, fable-like story, the film follows a man trying to escape an island on which he has been washed ashore, only to be stopped in his tracks by a giant red turtle. When he attempts to defeat this magnificent creature an unexpected twist prompts the man to stay on the island and learn to make a life there. A contemplative meditation on the relationship between man and nature, The Red Turtle is the most artfully rendered animated film of the year.

"A fable so simple, so pure, it feels as if it has existed for hundreds of years, like a brilliant shard of sea glass rendered smooth and elegant through generations of retelling." Peter Debruge, Variety
