The Red Turtle is Ghibli's first international co-production, directed by the Oscar®-winning Michaël Dudok de Wit, making his feature debut here.

A wordless, fable-like story, the film follows a man trying to escape an island on which he has been washed ashore, only to be stopped in his tracks by a giant red turtle. When he attempts to defeat this magnificent creature an unexpected twist prompts the man to stay on the island and learn to make a life there. A contemplative meditation on the relationship between man and nature, The Red Turtle is the most artfully rendered animated film of the year.
