film synopsis
How do you cope with empty-nest syndrome? Well, if you're Kjeld (Søren Malling) and Vibeke (Bodil Jørgensen), a middle-aged couple who've been feeling at sea since the departure of their grown son, you go looking for your lost youth. They find it in the form of the apartment they lived in as a young couple-when it comes on the market, they buy it and move in. As Kjeld sets about "renovating" in order to give the apartment the run-down look and feel of the way it was in the couple's student days, director Christian Tafdrup takes a bold leap: one morning Kjeld and Vibeke awaken to discover that they really are 30 years younger...
Avoiding clichés and spiking his deadpan tale with moments of surrealism and even horror, Tafdrup has created a sui generis take on the old saw, "If I only knew then what I know now." Because Kjeld and Vibeke the Younger retain the memories of their older selves, Parents ventures into sometimes dangerous but always entertaining and even enlightening places...
