Several years into the talkie revolution that swept Hollywood, Charlie Chaplin chose to go against the grain by releasing CITY LIGHTS as a silent film, save for its musical score and a few sound effects. The result was one of his most popular and critically ac-claimed films. Once again cast as the Little Tramp, Chaplin makes the acquaintance of a blind flower girl (Virginia Cherrill), who through a series of coincidences, has gotten the impression that the shabby tramp is a millionaire. A beguiling blend of comedy and drama, CITY LIGHTS contains some of the funniest and most poignant scenes in movie history.

Aristocratic Captain de Boeldieu (Pierre Fresnay) and his mechan-ic, Lieutenant Maréchal (Jean Gabin) are shot down by Captain von Rauffenstein (Erich von Stroheim), who treats them with customary officers' hospitality. The two downed pilots are then sent to a German POW camp, where they quickly join a group of prisoners who have concocted an elaborate escape plan. The first foreign language film ever nominated for the Best Picture Oscar® (1938), GRAND ILLUSION is regarded by critics and film historians as one of the masterpieces of French cinema and among the greatest films ever made. This screening of the beautifully restored, brand new Blu-Ray is the first on the West Coast.

The incomparable Toshiro Mifune stars in Akira Kurosawa’s visually stunning and darkly comic YOJIMBO, the most popular of Kurosawa's films in Japan. To rid a terror-stricken village of corruption, wily masterless samurai Sanjuro turns a range war between two evil clans to his own advantage. The film's look and themes were in part inspired by the Western and, in turn, Mifume's brilliant characterization of Sanjuro became the inspira-tion for Clint Eastwood's Man With No Name in A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS. The beautiful cinematography is restored to its original splendor in this 2010 Criterion Collection Blu-Ray.
