film synopsis
Deep within the lush green hills outside San Miguel, where snakes, scorpions and other creatures lurk, grade-schooler Ana and her best friends Maria and Paula dig holes in the earth, small enough to crawl into and hide from the heavily armed soldiers that routinely invade their tiny village. Raised by single parent Rita (Mayra Batalla), Ana chafes against the strict rules her mother has put in place – no makeup, no eye contact and keep a shaved head in order to make herself a less enticing target to traffickers. As the trio’s friendship deepens into adolescence, the girls continue to maintain some sense of normalcy amid the chaos. But as the violence intensifies, Ana must confront the reality of what it means to be a young woman in a war zone, in this lyrical, emotionally powerful tale from acclaimed documentarian Tatiana Huezo.
