PSIFF screens Foreign Language Oscar Shortlist

20th ANNUAL PALM SPRINGS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL SCREENS FOREIGN LANGUAGE OSCAR SHORTLIST


Three Films to Showcase This Weekend at Festival;
All Nine Films to Screen for Best of Fest


Palm Springs, CA (January 14, 2009) – The 20th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival will screen the nine films selected to advance in the next round of voting in the Foreign Language Film category for the 81st Academy Awards®. The Festival, held from held from January 8-19, 2009, selected 50 of the 65 films that had originally qualified in this category. The films, listed in alphabetical order by country, are Revanche (Austria), director Gotz Spielmann; The Necessities of Life (Canada), director Benoit Pilon; The Class (France), director Laurent Cantet; The Baader Meinhof Complex (Germany), director Uli Edel; Waltz with Bashir (Israel), director Ari Folman; Departures (Japan), director Yojiro Takita; Tear This Heart Out (Mexico), director Roberto Sneider; Everlasting Moments (Sweden), director Jan Troell; 3 Monkeys (Turkey), direcor Nuri Bilge Ceylan.

The three films that will screen at the Festival this weekend are:

Departures
Friday, January 16 at 10:30 a.m. at Regal Palm Springs
Saturday, January 17 at 8:30 p.m. at Regal Palm Springs

Tear This Heart Out
Thursday, January 15 at 7:00 p.m. at Regal Palm Springs

Waltz with the Bashir
Saturday, January 17 at 7:30 p.m. at Camelot Theatre
Sunday, January 18 at 10:30 a.m. at Camelot Theatre

The other films screened earlier in the week during the Festival, however with the announcement of the official nine short-listed film titles, the Festival is arranging to schedule many of the films to re-screen again on Monday, January 19, 2009 as part of the Best of the Fest program. A special jury of international film critics will review the nine shortlisted films along with the other 41 films screening in the Festival to award the FIPRESCI Award for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year, Best Actor and Best Actress. Founded in 1990, by then Mayor Sonny Bono, the PSIFF is one of the largest film festivals in North America. The Festival’s 20th Annual Awards Gala is presented by Cartier and sponsored by Mercedes Benz and Entertainment Tonight.
