In this Merchant Ivory production set in pre-WWII China, we follow the chaste courtship between a Russian countess (Natasha Richardson) fallen on rough times and a former American Ambassador (Ralph Fiennes). Written by the novelist Kazuo Ishiguro (“The Remains of the Day”), the film is full of assured performances and era-perfect costume and production design.
