In this impressive historical epic, director Feng Xiaogang (who scored a blockbuster hit with his earthquake drama, "Aftershock") details one of the darkest moments in Chinese history. Three million people in Henan province died in the famine of 1942 when poor harvests and massive drought compounded the chaos of the Sino-Chinese war.
In this gut-wrenching account, wealthy landlord Master Fan sees his son killed and his village burnt to the ground by bandits. He and his family are forced to join the millions of refugees fleeing famine and advancing Japanese troups. While the Nationalist government turns a blind eye to the starving masses, Time journalist Theodore H White (Adrien Brody) treks to Henan to investigate.
He finds people dying everyday, some trading their children for food while others resort to cannibalism. "Feng Xiaogang has been called China’s Spielberg. Back to 1942 shows the director's mastery of chaotic spectacle, massed human motion and elegant camera movements.”
