Defiant Requiem

This inspiring documentary traces the remarkable story of the inmates of the Nazi concentration camp, Terezin, and their struggle to maintain their humanity in the face of hunger, disease and slave labor through art, staging plays, composing opera and using paper and ink to record the horrors around then. This creative rebellion reached its peak when one man, Rafael Schächter – an imprisoned conductor who had smuggled his collection of sheet music into the camp – taught a choir of 150 inmates to perform one of the worlds most difficult and powerful choral works, Verdi’s Requiem, re-imagined as a condemnation of the Nazis. The choir would ultimately confront their Nazi captors face to face, and sing to them what they dare not say.
For years, conductor Murry Sidlin dreamed of bringing the Requiem back to Terezin to commemorate that valiant performance, and now, through soaring concert footage, powerful survivor recollections and evocative animation, Defiant Requiem brings the incredible story of this artistic uprising to life.
