One of the great pleasures of programming is randomly stumbling across a new filmmaker who plays with convention. In his work as an experimental artist, Emmanuel Saada creates provocative interactive experiences for the public. And in his debut feature film Elephants, he further explores a favourite theme: the experience of silence.

Elephants is a film about the nuance of shifts in personal relationships between a group of friends and family, after the loss of a mother and the impact of a pregnancy. Yet rather than serving up the character’s thoughts and feeling through expository dialogue, Saada focuses more on the emotional fluctuations between lovers, the delicious comfort of co-existence, and the unspoken angst between estranged siblings. In watching, one feels like a witness to private moments rarely portrayed on screen.

Saada’s original approach breathes fresh life into the medium and renders him an intriguing new talent to watch.
