85-year-old Texan Lisa Modlich is not your stereotypical sweet old lady. She will stop at nothing to claim her first World Over-80s Table Tennis Championships. Lisa is one of eight tenacious competitors featured in this smashing and suspenseful documentary that culminates in the championships held in glamorous Inner Mongolia.

Among the other fiery competitors we meet are studly Brit Les D'Arcy, still weightlifting at 89; his countryman Terry Donlon, bouncing back after serious health issues; Germany's Inge Hermann, introduced to the sport as nursing-home physical therapy; and Aussie sensation Dorothy DeLow, a media darling at the tender age of 100. As the competition heats up, there is even trash talking – the words “stupid cow” are hurled at Lisa. But she remains undaunted. One piece of advice: stay away from her wicked forehand.

“The Hartfords don’t stint on the chuckles. But they’re of the affectionate variety… With its sure and steady yet light hand on issues of mortality and life’s passages, it wins gold.” James Adams, The Globe and Mail
