Time of My Life
Belgium, 2012, 120 Minute Running Time
Program: World Cinema Now
Language: Dutch English Sub-Titles
In 2002, Mario Verstraete, 39, became the first Belgian to take advantage of a controversial law making it legal for doctors to help end the lives of those whose suffering had become unbearable due to a medical condition. That Verstraete (played here by Koen De Graeve), diagnosed with an insidious form of multiple sclerosis, was also a rising politician instrumental in getting the law passed adds historical weight to Nic Balthazar’s alternately moving and surprisingly funny chronicle of Verstraete’s double fight.
Told from the point of view of Verstraete’s best friend Thomas (Geert Van Rampelberg), a doctor conflicted by his desire to adhere to the Hippocratic Oath and his need to help his friend, Balthazar’s film elevates the euthanasia debate by focusing on how the articulate Mario and his friends deal with the crisis and come to terms with both the philosophical and profoundly human sides of the issue. From the director of Ben X, Time of My Life is emotionally devastating.
