“How’m I doing?” Those words will forever be linked with the larger-than-life three-term Mayor of New York Ed Koch, who ruled the city from 1978-89, perhaps its most tumultuous years. Unlike Koch’s own use of the phrase as self-promotion, Neil Barsky’s probing and entertaining documentary seeks an honest answer from many sources, not least of which from the man himself.

The high drama of New York in the 70s and 80s is as supersized as Koch’s ego. Issues such as racial division, financial collapse, and AIDS are all captured here in vivid archival footage.

Setting the documentary apart from other biopics is the filmmaker’s decision to tag along with the still feisty on-the-go 87-year-old Koch. In spite of his unprecedented access, Barsky, a former reporter, pushes Koch to set the record straight, for instance, on the question of whether he is gay. This portrait of a lion in winter gives us a unique window into Koch’s world. We may or may not like the man, but we can’t take our eyes off him.

Director Neil Barsky expected to attend the January 4 and January 6 screenings
