James Cromwell and Genevieve Bujold star as Craig and Irene, an elderly couple who reside on the large farm they’ve inhabited for decades on the New Brunswick shore. While Craig is hearty and headstrong, Irene has lately been showing signs of aging, and though he’s determined to avoid the subject, their grown children are suggesting the time is coming to put her in a ‘home’. Deciding that the answer to this dilemma is to build them a new, smaller house on their property where they can live out their days together, Craig sets about building it. But events start to spin out of control as he runs afoul of the local bureaucracy, and his obstinacy threatens to upend his plans for the couple’s happy elder days.
Cromwell has never given a finer performance than he does in this stirring and surprisingly upbeat tale, and Bujold is a wonder to behold as his faltering, occasionally headstrong wife. Together the pair provide a treat for the eyes and the heart as a couple who’ve weathered life’s traumas and are devoted to each other, still.
