Marilyn Monroe is one of the most iconic symbols of glamour and raw female sexuality the movies have ever produced. Her story has been told thousands of times through books, articles and films – yet never as revealingly as in Liz Garbus’s documentary, which draws on hundreds of never-before-seen personal papers, diaries and letters, as well as newly released home movies, photos and outtakes.

Rather than choose one actress to voice Monroe’s words, Garbus collaborates with a dozen contemporary actors – Elizabeth Banks, Ellen Burstyn, Glenn Close, Viola Davis, Jennifer Ehle, Lindsay Lohan, Lili Taylor, Uma Thurman, Marisa Tomei and Evan Rachel Wood – to offer a vivid, prismatic, literally multi-faceted portrait of the private Marilyn.

It’s a choice that speaks eloquently to how deeply Monroe resonates with her peers, even half a century since her untimely death. To round out the picture, we also hear the reminiscences and insights of friends and admirers: Elia Kazan, Gloria Steinem and Truman Capote, among others (voiced by the likes of Adrien Brody, Hope Davis and Jeremy Piven).

“Beautifully-made […] lucid and thoughtful.” Stephen Farber, Hollywood Reporter
