It takes an apartment full of genial ghosts to teach the young wannabe actor Pietro (a winning Elio Germano) how to break out of his lonely, mildly obsessive shell in Ferzan Ozpetek’s perfumed delight.

Shortly after moving in to his large and suspiciously cheap apartment, Pietro notices that he is not alone. In fact, he is surrounded by the eight elegantly dressed ghosts of a troupe of actors, all of whom mysteriously died in the apartment in 1943. What is at first rather unnerving evolves into something more congenial, as Pietro and his companions become friends, with the phantom troupe giving the gay Pietro romantic advice, acting tips and encouragement, and the young actor resolving to get to the bottom of the mystery surrounding his new friends’ deaths, a journey that opens him up to new worlds… As light and refreshing as a welcome summer breeze, this Italian hit has charm and warmth to spare.
