If Matteo Garrone’s thrilling gangster movie Gomorrah spoke to the primary influence of Martin Scorsese, his follow up, Reality is a very different kettle of fish, and clearly made under the sign of Federico Fellini. Fortunately Garrone has the talent to live up to his inspirations, and Reality is a bold satire on our contemporary fixation with celebrity and reality TV, an allegory that takes a personable Neopolitan fish merchant on a pilgrimage to Fellini’s old Cinecitta studio.

Prevailed on by his kids to audition for a Roman Big Brother, Luciano (Aniello Arena) is transformed by an experience he describes in terms usually associated with therapy or the confessional. Convinced he’s nailed it, Luciano prematurely announces as much to the entire neighborhood, then falls prey to paranoid delusions that the show may be vetting him, and alters his lifestyle accordingly – to the dismay of his wife and family. Propelled by Garrone’s dynamic camerawork and Arena’s sympathetic portrait of a natural exhibitionist contaminated by the faux familiarity proffered by TV fame, this is a confident display of big screen superiority.
