Irresistibly combining sparkling soul-music performances and raucous humor, Wayne Blair’s feel-good underdog success story is based on the real-life tale of an all-female Aboriginal singing group in 1960s Australia that went from a quaint folk act to headlining soul divas.
Shifty Irish boozehound and wannabe music promoter Dave (Bridesmaids’ sweet cop Chris O’Dowd, hilarious) hears an indigenous sister act performing at a talent contest and convinces Gail (Deborah Mailman), Cynthia (Miranda Tapsell) and the teenage Julie (Jessica Mauboy) that he’s the man to take them places. Provided, that is, they dump the gentle harmonies of folk in favor of the sweat and sass of sexy soul. The young women recruit their cousin Kay (Shari Sebbens), Dave secures an audition for a gig entertaining U.S. Marines in Vietnam and The Sapphires are on their way… While O’Dowd is the comic center of the tale, the film’s (ahem) soul belongs to the four singing Sapphires. They are guaranteed to leave you with a smile on your face and a funky song in your heart.
