Ginger Baker is best known as the drummer for the 60s rock supergroup Cream. He’s also known as a vitriolic free spirit likely to strike out at friend and foe. And in the movie’s opening scene, he does just that, taking direct aim at filmmaker Jay Bulger’s nose.

Baker, as the fascinating interviews with bandmate Eric Clapton and others reveal, is a perplexing, scary, passionate mess of a man. And, oh yes, he’s one hell of a drummer, perhaps the greatest of them all, credited as the inventor of the rock drum solo and earning the respect of his jazz heroes like Art Blakey and Max Roach. Plenty of sex, drugs and ex-wives/girlfriends aside, this is not your standard VH1 “behind the music” fairy tale. At the height of his creative powers, Baker’s musical inspiration took him to Nigeria, where he built a recording studio for Afrobeat musical pioneer Fela Kuti.

Any documentary that begins the way this one does is sure to grab our attention. What makes Beware of Mr. Baker special is that it never lets us go.
