Charlotte Rampling shows she’s still got more than what it takes in this probing London neo-noir thriller.

Rampling is Anna, who lives alone with her grown daughter and grand-daughter, but hankers after some male companionship since her husband left her. Her first venture into the world of speed-dating end nastily – in fact her date winds up dead, though Anna is far from the only suspect and she denies all knowledge of it. Gabriel Byrne is the lead investigator on the case. A divorcée himself, he’s more than a little intrigued by this attractive, intelligent, but bewildering creature.

Directed and adapted from Elsa Lewin’s novel by Rampling’s son, Barnaby Southcombe, I, Anna reminds us that movie star charisma doesn’t have to fade with age – Rampling and Byrne have terrific chemistry together. But this is not just an exercise in style, it’s a sensitive, sympathetic study of the effects of loneliness and rejection.
