This heartwarming, brightly stylized coming-of-age tale tells the story of 11-year-old cycling whiz Freddy. He’s the son of the local butcher in an idyllic village in Dutch-speaking Belgium. Sadly, Freddy has an embarrassing medical condition that makes him the butt of much cruel teasing, so his overprotective mother tries to keep him at home, away from other children.
Freddy’s isolated life is turned upside down in 1975, when the first supermarket (“Magique”) opens in the village and he makes friends with the French-speaking daughter of the manager. To publicize the opening of the store the manager organizes a bicycle road race. The prize for the winner is an opportunity to meet cycling legend Eddy Merkx, a Tour de France champion who just happens to be Freddy’s hero Freddy's father strongly opposes the supermarket because it threatens his small, independent butcher shop and he warns his family not to get involved with the race. However, Freddy secretly registers for it. This act of disobedience winds up opening new opportunities for Freddy and for all people around him.
“A light-hearted and endearing cycling tale that is also about the clash between old and new and breaking with tradition because of the call of something fresh and different.” Luc Joris, De Morgen
