Paolo and Vittorio Taviani, the justly lauded icons of the 1980s international art-house scene responsible for such classics as Padre Padrone, Night of the Shooting Stars and Kaos, have returned to form with this docudrama that tantalizingly blurs the line between fiction and reality. Set in the Rebibbia prison in Rome and drawing its cast from inmates—murderers, drug dealers, Mafiosi—in the maximum-security wing, the film chronicles the auditions for, and staging of, a version of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar to profound and sometimes startling effect. Filmmakers half the age of the Tavianis—they are now in their eighties—rarely make films this young at heart. In black and white with color sequences.

“The film is entirely characteristic of the Tavianis in that it is a witty cautionary tale of failed idealism, revolutionary communal action, endless cyclical Utopianism and the value and concomitant cost of a commitment to art… [T]he Tavianis remain deeply aware of such contradictions and paradoxes, and it’s this that makes Caesar Must Die so humane, intelligent and affecting.” Geoff Andrew, Time Out London.
