Following in the fresh footsteps of Ira Sachs’s Keep the Lights On, David Lambert’s Brussels-set debut again pushes the boundaries of contemporary gay cinema, but does so by focusing more on character and dramatic situations than on explicit sexuality. The up-and-down romance at its heart is captured with a rare honesty, a terrific eye for the telling detail and melancholy songs from art-popsters Valleys.

After flirtatiously eyeing each other up over the course of an alcohol-fueled night, pretty Paulo (Matila Malliarakis) and hirsute bartender Ilir (Guillaume Gouix) end up in bed together, Ilir having protectively carted the comatose Paulo back to his apartment. The blond, immature Paulo is a pianist who is earning some Euros at the cinematheque by providing accompaniment to silent films (a revival of The Wind), while Albanian-immigrant Ilir plays bass in a traveling band. With music — and little else — in common, a tentative affair is embarked upon. Malliarakis and Gouix are expert at handling the unexpected shifts in a relationship that will face some very tough circumstances, especially when Ilir inexplicably disappears…
