2012 is the 50th anniversary of Samoan Independence. But 40 years ago, “Pasifika” families living in Auckland were the target of dawn raids designed to force them out of the country, even though they were there legally. Called “overstayers” in reference to the charges leveled against them regarding expired visas, the treatment of these Samoan resonates still with the same issues we face today regarding immigration, displacement and the concept of home.
