Gus Van Sant - Spirit of Short Film Award Show
90 Minute Running Time

One of America’s most celebrated and talented filmmakers, Gus Van Sant, will be presented with ShortFest’s highest honor in a special show celebrating his work in film. With a body of work that includes two Oscar nominations for Best Picture, and numerous other honors including awards from the National Society of Film Critics, the New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco Film Critics and Best Director and Best Film (Palme d’Or) Awards at the Cannes Film Festival, Van Sant has consistently broken new ground in the cinema, creating work that challenges convention and preconceptions. His feature films, including Drugstore Cowboy, My Own Private Idaho, To Die For, Good Will Hunting, Milk and Elephant, among many others, have won wide acclaim, and proven that a distinctive directorial vision can gain both critical praise and box office appeal.

Van Sant’s work in the short film field has been equally ground breaking, winning awards at the Berlin, Seattle and Oberhausen Film Festivals. Like his work in Feature films, he brings a singular vision to his short film work, reinventing genres and subverting conventions.

We’re delighted to have this opportunity to welcome Gus Van Sant to ShortFest, and celebrate his career and his contributions to the art of the short film with an on-stage interview and the presentation of five of his acclaimed and unique shorts.
