An engrossing account of the first significant American country music star to openly identify herself as gay, Wish Me Away won the Jury Award for Best Documentary at the Los Angeles Film Festival for good reason: its moving tale of a woman’s struggle to stop living a lie makes for a powerful and emotionally rich journey to self-realization. The film introduces us to Country music star Chely Wright (Shut Up And Drive;Single White Female), who comes out in the full glare of the public spotlight at the peak of her career – a courageous choice, given the stigma in the conservative world of country music. Her struggle to reach this point is made even more poignant by her strong Christian faith, having been raised in the tiny Bible Belt town of Wellsville, Kansas. The film traces her early life; her emergence as a star (she was named top new female vocalist of 1995 by the Academy of Country Music) and especially her long, arduous journey toward coming out. Constantly surprising, deeply moving and undeniably inspirational, this film is a revelatory gem.

Director Beverly Kopf and Director Bobbie Birleffi are expected to attend both screenings.
