Travel writer Eva never really wanted to be a mother – and certainly not the mother of a difficult boy who commits a horrendous crime just days before his 16th birthday. Now, two years later, it is time for her to come to terms with her marriage, career, parenthood and Kevin’s horrific rampage. As Eva goes over this grim reckoning, which unfolds as a series of flashbacks, she fears that her dislike for the sacrifices and social demotions of motherhood, may, from the very start, have had a role in driving Kevin so nihilistically off the rails. As in her previous films Ratcatcher and Morvern Callar, director Ramsay, a former photographer, relies on her exquisitely calibrated visual sense to viscerally convey the climate of emotional desolation leading to the tragedy. Like Lionel Shriver’s novel, her grippingly cinematic film is searingly honest and holds up a mirror to an entire culture. And as fiercely independent Eva, the expressive Swinton has a challenging role to rival her star turn in I Am Love.
