Masterfully interweaving art, politics and history, the spellbinding Unfinished Spaces takes us back to a little known phenomenon that took place in the aftermath of the Cuban revolution. The film centers around three architects Castro commissioned to design and build “the most beautiful of art schools in the world”. Intended to house five artistic disciplines–the plastic arts, modern dance, ballet, theatre and music– the sensuously designed structures were constructed on the grounds of what had been Havana’s most exclusive country club. The fantastical buildings mimicked organic shapes, and resisted right angles, and soon students from all over Cuba came to study at this wondrous place. But when Castro turned to the Soviet Union for support in the face of US animosity, he and Che soon decided that the school and its buildings had become a symbol of decadence antithetical to the aims of the revolution, spelling doom for the entire endeavor.Remarkable for its exploration of a little-known architectural marvel, and revelatory in its recounting of the social and political forces of the time and place, Unfinished Spaces is a strikingly provocative work.
