This is only their second feature since Clockwatchers put them on the map in 1997, but writer/director Jill Sprecher and cowriter (and sister) Karen Sprecher make up for lost time with an ambitious and ingeniously structured film noir-slash-black comedy featuring sterling turns from Greg Kinnear, Alan Arkin, and Billy Crudup. Kinnear is sleazy Kenosha, Wisconsin, insurance salesman Mickey Prohaska, a hustler who would sell his own mother a bogus policy if it meant a payday. That is exactly what he is trying to do to aging farmer Gorvy Hauer (Arkin) when circumstances lead him to discover that Hauer’s old violin is worth $25,000. Thoughts of a sale are replaced by thoughts of a steal, as Mickey hatches a convoluted scam, complicated by an ex-con alarm installer (Crudup, hilarious) and a corpse…. The dead-of-winter setting and unexpected plot twists might bring to mind a certain Coen brothers’ classic, but the Sprechers make the material all their own, fashioning a thoroughly black and occasionally bloody comedic triumph. Crack cinematography by Mike Leigh regular Dick Pope only adds to the film’s dark pleasures.
