Hungarian master Béla Tarr (Sátántangó, Werkmeister Harmonies) has been adamant that The Turin Horse will be his last film—he plans to stay busy by opening a film school in Split, Croatia—and that sense of finality is brilliantly conveyed in the end-of-days tone and subject matter of his swan song. Co-directed by Tarr’s longtime editor Ágnes Hranitzky, the black-and-white film opens with a furious marvel of cinematic technique—a howling six-minute take of an old man (János Derzsi) propelling a horse-drawn cart through a portentous storm—before settling down to delineate, in Tarr’s characteristic long takes, the quotidian details of life in the ascetic shack shared by the man and his daughter (Erika Bók). The intimately observed daily tasks of cooking, drawing water from the well, doing laundry, and sleeping, slowly gather a cumulative power as the wind outside increases in force and malevolence. Is this the end of the world? Tarr and ace cinematographer Fred Kelemen have crafted a profound and unforgettable answer to that question.
