“Beautifully conceived and expertly edited, video artist Rania Stephan's film is a multifaceted work that uses clips from Egyptian star Hosni's movies to explore the iconic actress’s screen image. Commissioned by the Sharjah Art Foundation, this playful documentary reveals the diverse modes of female representation embodied in the charismatic Hosni's signature roles and with them, the variety of genres in popular Egyptian cinema (the Arab world’s largest) from 1960 – 1990. The clips in Act I reveal the gorgeous Hosni in the bloom of youth. Act II focuses on her as a sexualized woman and Act III shows her characters undergoing emotional extremes. “The film has two fundamental principles,” Stephan says. “The first is that her work talks about her better than anyone else could. The second is that through elements of fiction I can make another fiction.” Debate still rages around the oft-married Hosni’s death in London in 2001. Though it was officially ruled a suicide, recent revelations support the claim she was murdered by Egypt's intelligence services, making Stephan's work ripe with extra-textual meaning.” - Jay Weissberg, Variety
