In the days leading up to the end of the Korean War, a South Korean commander is killed by “friendly fire”—or was it a communist spy?—and young officer Kang (Shin Ha-gyun) is sent to the front to investigate. So far, so classical, but director Jang Hun’s superbly realized action drama inverts many of the tropes we’ve come to expect from the traditional “war is hell” genre. While re-connecting with a military friend long thought dead, and dealing with a drug-addicted commanding officer, Kang is both disturbed and fascinated to learn that the warring sides in this forsaken spot take time out to communicate with each other in an almost friendly fashion…. A huge domestic hit upon its release, The Front Line pulls no punches in its depiction of bloody battle while mining a deeply felt, if long buried and seemingly impossible, desire for the idea of a reunified Korea. Jang Hun has touched a nerve with this visceral work.
