Seven years after his excellent debut Maria Full of Grace, Joshua Marston returns with a precise and inexorable drama set in Albania that explores the clash between modernity and tradition arising from a blood feud between rival families. The “Kanun” is a 15th-century code, still in existence in Albania, that allows one family, aggrieved by another, to exact revenge on the perpetrators—an ancient rule that comes into effect when teenaged Nik’s father kills a neighbor during a dispute. According to the Kanun, the only way Nik can be assured of safety is by remaining full-time in his family home, a proscription that a teen experiencing his first love finds impossible to follow…. Marston collaborated on the script with Albanian Andamion Murataj and the result is a film steeped in realistic detail and moments of quotidian truth. The use of nonprofessional actors, all of whom acquit themselves more than admirably, only enhances the film’s naturalistic and ultimately tragic aura. Winner: Silver Bear Best Screenplay, Berlin Film Festival.
