Starting off in a conventional manner before sliding into an elliptical but fascinating land of dreams, fantasies, flashbacks, and fairy tales, Kongdej Jaturanrasmee’s quirky and inviting drama crosses a crime story with a uniquely Thai meditation on identity and its fluidity. Lek (Apichai Tragoolpadetgrai), a lonely locksmith, and Kong (Prinya Ngamwongwarn), an aspiring writer, work beside each other at the local mall. Together they hatch a detailed plan to break into neighborhood homes. Once inside, however, they don’t steal anything—they just take away ideas of possible alternate lives for themselves. When one such adventure goes awry, Lek wakes up in a hospital where everyone insists on calling him “Kong.” Cue the transition to the waking dream nature of the film’s second half, where Lek/Kong slips in and out of “reality” while trying to locate his missing friend. The beautifully realized air of mystery that permeates P-047 even extends to its name. In keeping with the director’s wishes, you will have to see the film to find out just what that enigmatic title refers to….
