A one-night stand veers from casual sex to something more intimate and revealing in Anne Émond’s bold debut feature, a striking film on a number of counts. From its pulsating, slow motion opening sequence in a Montreal rave, Nuit #1 makes it crystal clear there is a remarkable filmmaker here, someone with an instinct for putting images and sounds together on screen. Yet Émond (who also wrote the screenplay) has the courage to concentrate most of what follows on just two people in one insalubrious apartment. This movie will be talked about for its intensely carnal and frankly erotic coupling, which takes up a good portion of the film’s first act. Yet in some ways it only really gets going when the action stops, when Nikolai (Dimitri Storoge) wakes to find Clara (the impressive Catherine de Léan) sneaking out on him, and calls her back for their first real conversation; a prolonged, raw, sometimes bitter heart-to-heart that tells us perhaps more than we bargained for, not just about these two twentysomethings, but about the way we live now. Winner: Best Canadian Feature, Vancouver International Film Festival

Director Anne Emond and Producer Nancy Grant are expected to attend both the 1/11 and 1/12 screenings.
