The once illustrious Lopez-Aranda family has faded and the decaying mansion is the only remaining emblem of their past glory. Gaspar–a distinguished ex congressman–and his sister Celia–once the darling of Philippines Opera–lacked the shrewdness to maintain their elegant status. Having lost her money and her share in the house, Celia stays as Gaspar’s caregiver, giving singing lessons and taking in boarders to stretch the budget. To break the solitude she sings arias to her music-loving brother. When Gaspar slips into a coma, his daughter Raquel comes home from the USA determined to sell the house in order to salvage her own finances while other relatives push for their share. In this impressive, deeply lyrical first feature, which won the New Currents award at the Busan International Film Festival, Arcenas depicts the decline of an aristocratic family with flair, humor and reminiscences of the Golden Age of Philippines Opera.
