The very best documentaries can reveal the absurdity, beauty, and tragedy of the human condition – all within the trajectory of one person’s life.Michel Petrucciani by Academy Award-nominated director Michael Radford (Il Positino) is just such a film.Petrucciani's story reads more like myth than real life.Born with glass bone disease, a crippling genetic disorder, he never grew more than three feet tall, his bones so brittle they would fracture at the slightest pressure.Amazingly, this boy from the south of France grew up to become one of the great jazz pianists of all-time.A prodigy at seven, by thirteen, he was already a formidable improviser. His rising star took him to Paris and then to the land of his dreams—America—where he played and recorded with many of the jazz greats. Thanks to wonderful archival material, we are given an all-access pass to Petrucciani’s extraordinary performances and infectious, devil-may-care personality.Contemporary interviews reveal further layers of complexity. And then there is the music – inventive, technically superb, sublime.
Director Michael Radford is expected to attend both screenings.
