Hotel Lux is an entertainingly meandering historical comedy that begins in Nazi Germany in 1933 and moves to the Soviet Union five years later. Oscillating between drama and farce, the film boasts rich cinematography and elaborate historical production design. A charming womanizer who makes a living impersonating Stalin at a Berlin cabaret, Hans Zeisig is more concerned with getting to Hollywood than with politics. In contrast, his partner Siggi Meyer (who impersonates Hitler) is an active member of the Communist Party who soon runs afoul of the show’s Nazi clients. Siggi introduces Hans to the beautiful Frida, with whom Hans is instantly smitten. They are forced to flee, and unable to get a visa for America, Hans ends up at the famous Hotel Lux in Moscow, supposedly a safe haven–though danger and suspicion lurk around every corner. When he is mistaken for Hitler’s astrologist, whom Stalin is keen to meet, Hans plays along with the ruse, relishing the exalted status the mistake affords him. Meanwhile he attempts to win over the affections of Frida, who has reappeared in his life….
