“Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards.” - Soren Kierkegaard In her third feature, young French writer/director Mia Hansen-Løve (Father of My Children) continues to explore themes of loss, emotional unrest and the passage of time. Fifteen-year-old Camille falls hopelessly in love with an older boy, the free-spirited Sullivan. When his wanderlust takes him to Argentina she is devastated. He writes sporadically but the raw frankness of his letters–alternately passionate and ambivalent–provoke an all-consuming obsession in Camille. Eventually she moves on, turning her focus to her studies, and she meets an architecture professor whose intellect and poetry inspire her. Some 8 years later, Sullivan returns to find Camille has blossomed into a confident and accomplished young woman while he struggles to make a living and find his niche. Now that Camille has a full and happy life, is there room for him in it? Wonderfully adept at evoking tone and mood, Hanson-Løve may not break new ground but she digs into life’s dichotomies to unearth fresh insights.
