Based on the best-selling novel Bien Di Lane Yian by Xio Min Lee, Cold Steel is set against the backdrop of the second Sino-Japanese War (1937–1945). When Wu Liangfeng, a young hunter from a small village, rescues a downed American Flying Tiger his life is irrevocably changed. A chance meeting with a lovely young widow, Lui Yan, and a teahouse brawl with a group of rowdy Chinese soldiers leads Liangfeng along a path that results in his becoming one of the country’s top marksmen. Along with his sniper unit, he must face insurmountable odds at every turn to liberate his country from the brutal invasion of Japanese forces. Director David Wu (who edited many of John Woo’s best films) is best known as an action specialist, but here he draws on his admiration for classic Italian cinema to interweave intense scenes of conflict with the simple yet poignant story of two people who will challenge even the Japanese invasion to realize their love.
