As news stories about the ongoing protests in Tahrir Square highlight the sexual harassment of female journalists, Cairo 678 shows that unwelcome sexual advances from men are endemic in modern Egypt. The film focuses on three Cairene women from different social backgrounds and how they fight back. Working-class mom Fayza (famed chanteuse/actress Bushra) can no longer endure the groping that she experiences everyday on the bus. After taking a self-defense lesson from the upper-class Seba–herself the victim of gang harassment–Fayza takes action and stabs a few wandering hands with her veil pin. Also seeking Seba’s advice is lively Nelly, a rising young comedian, who decides to risk her career and her relationship in order to file Egypt’s first sexual harassment lawsuit. In his directing debut, Mohamed Diab throws a harsh light on this issue via a deft combination of anger and humor, revealing how all too often shame is used as a weapon to keep women "in their place."
