“Sui generis” is a term too often used to describe a film that doesn’t fit into the usual categories, but in the case of Athina Rachel Tsangari’s occasionally funny, frequently moving and all together unique Attenberg, it fits perfectly. The sexually naïve Marina (Ariane Labed) is a 20-something whose life alternates between watching nature documentaries with, and caring for, her dying father (Vangelis Mourikis), and more freewheeling moments of inspired lunacy with her uninhibited friend Bella (Evangelia Randou). So far, so familiar–except the movie utilizes techniques drawn from such diverse sources as musicals, Monty Python, the films of Robert Bresson and contemporary performance art to paint a minimal, modernist picture of Marina’s sexual awakening. Tsangari, who was involved with the Oscar-nominated Dogtooth and who cast that film’s director, Yorgos Lanthimos, as the man who kick-starts Marina’s sexual life, is one of a new group of Greek filmmakers determined to shake up the Greek cultural establishment at this economically harrowing time. With Attenberg she has done exactly that, while fashioning an unforgettable film in the process.
