Norman is a teenage boy whose wisecracking, irreverent attitude masks his deep unhappiness–-his mother is dead, his father is practically bedridden, and his schoolmates think he’s a troubled weirdo. Then he finds out that his father has been diagnosed with stomach cancer and doesn’t have long to live. But what if Norman was the one who was sick? What starts as a white lie to a friend soon spreads through the whole high school and suddenly his peers and teachers revere “Norman the cancer victim.” He even finally attracts the interest of a cute girl.

But of course it becomes more and more difficult to live the lie--and Norman must find a way to admit the truth to others, and to himself. Dan Byrd plays Norman with the perfect combination of awkward humor, cynicism and melancholy, and the script is full of dark humor that skillfully balances the grim subject matter. The wonderful Richard Jenkins gives an emotionally charged yet subtle performance as Norman’s dying father. And a suitably idiosyncratic score by renowned indie musician Andrew Bird enhances this unique and affecting story about love, loss, and the importance of confronting the truth.
