When Everybody Loves Raymond creator Phil Rosenthal decides to bring his highly successful sitcom to Russia, the move seems logical given the runaway success there of such transplanted shows as The Nanny. But when Rosenthal arrives in Moscow for a series of meetings with his Russian counterparts, logic quickly goes out the window. Soon, Rosenthal is living an episode right out of Raymond -- with colorful characters, uncomfortable situations, and a whole lot of miscommunication. It is a classic fish out of water scenario that not only makes for one of the most enjoyable documentary viewing experiences of the year, but is a fun house mirror reflection of how these two countries continue to misunderstand each other.

Whether battling with the intimidating costume designer, trying to hold his vodka at a dinner party, or talking to his parents on Skype, Rosenthal, something of a cross between Ray Romano and Larry David, exhibits a nebbishy charm and everyman quality. As Rosenthal sets out to prove that comedy is a universal language, he may have stumbled upon a corollary -- a movie about a comedy that nobody finds funny (at first) is pretty darn hilarious.
