A delicious black comedy that veers from quirky mystery into more dark and violent places, Alan Butterworth’s debut feature takes a staple of Anglo filmmaking—the rural village filled with eccentrics—and puts a new spin on it. When their father dies, conservative Marcus (Mark Oosterveen) and his long-haired, loose-limbed brother Danny (Phillip James, channeling Russell Brand) descend on dad’s village for the funeral.

While inspecting their inherited “estate”—a ramshackle cottage—the brothers come across an aged friend of their father’s in a broom closet clutching a bag of money. And so begins the brothers’ initially hilarious but increasingly frightening adventure, an adventure that reveals the peculiar village folk to be not what they seem, to put it mildly. Butterworth’s decision to shoot in black and white adds to the creepiness, as the film straddles the border between dark farce and outright suspense thriller. The Drummond brothers will indeed need to summon up a collectively strong will to get out of the tangled web they’ve fallen into.
