Based on events that happened in Sudetenland near the northern border between Czechoslovakia and Germany, Habermann is set in a small village on the eve of WWII. The story revolves around a wealthy German sawmill owner who has married a young, beautiful Czech woman and counts a large number of Czechs among his workers and friends, but the bucolic life of the village goes through rapid changes once the Nazis annex the region in 1938.

For mill owner Habermann, life becomes increasingly uncomfortable, as the ruthless SS officer Major Kowalski questions his loyalty to Germany and his ties to his Czech wife and employees. This scrutiny is intensified when a number of his workers turn out to have ties to the resistance movement. When two German soldiers are found murdered, and Kowalski learns that Habermann’s wife is half Jewish, events spin out of control, pitting villager against villager and putting the hapless mill owner in an untenable position from which there is no easy escape. This gripping story of a village transformed through extraordinary events vividly illustrates the ways in which the best and worst of human nature emerge in the face of war and its aftermath.
