Summer Pasture chronicles one summer in the life of a young Tibetan family at a crossroads. Filmed in the high grasslands of eastern Tibet, in a region seldom visited by outsiders, we are given a glimpse into the life of Tibetan nomads. Locho, his wife Yama, and their infant daughter Jiatomah (“Pale Chubby Girl”) follow ancestral traditions, spending the summer months in the Zachukha grasslands, the highest, coldest, poorest and most remote region in Sichuan Province, China. Neither trees nor crops grow there--only the grass that sustains the family’s herd of yaks.

Historically, Tibetan nomads have thrived in this extreme environment where few other humans dare to live but the lure of modern life has prompted many nomadic families to move to permanent settlements in cities. As their pastoral traditions confront rapid modernization, Locho and Yama must reconcile the challenges that threaten their 4000 year old traditions and reshape their existence.
