The first feature film from Greenland, written and directed by the Greenland-born, Copenhagen-based Torben Bech and Otto Rosing, is, perhaps surprisingly, a very accomplished drama featuring stunning vistas and fine acting on the part of its mostly nonprofessional cast. Lars Rosing (brother of Otto) is Malik, a youngish Dane diagnosed with cancer who embarks on a journey through his past in the company of his Inuit cousin Michael. The two head into Greenland’s wilderness (where Bo Bilstrup’s cinematography is as much the star as the two leads) to a very remote area where Malik first uncovers—and then must come to terms with—a cache of family secrets.

Directors & Cinematographer to attend screenings
While the plot easily holds interest on its own, it’s the things we never see on cinema screens that prove the revelations: the relationship between the Danes and the local Inuit (Greenland is still considered part of Denmark), the untamed and strikingly beautiful landscapes, the encounters along the road between our traveling duo and the people they come across. The effect is both deeply felt and revelatory.
