As delicate as the fall of cherry blossoms in a spring breeze, The Japanese Wife is the story of two dreamy, romantic souls. Snehamoy (Rahul Bose), a shy village schoolteacher in remote Sunderbans, India, and Miyage (Chigusa Takaku), a delicate Japanese beauty from Yokohama, meet as pen pals and gradually fall in love. So complete is their connection that they marry, even though they have never physically met. He loves to fly the beautiful kites that she sends from Japan and she wears the bangles and vermillion in her hair of a traditional Bengali wife, but life keeps them apart.

A young widow, Sandhya (Raima Sen) and her eight-year-old son move into the house that Snehamoy shares with his mother, and Sandhya soon dotes on Snehamoy. An attachment grows and a cloud of doubt covers his relationships, since he now has the opportunity to experience palpable domesticity and fatherhood. Based on a short story by Kunal Basu, this haunting and poignant tale is a tender love poem where love transcends the physical.
